I’m sure by now everyone has realized that Saffron is something that is somewhat hard to find, and when you do find it, it is super expensive. Saffron is something that is so flavorful and pretty haha. I’ve grown up eating this since I am Middle Eastern, but I didn’t know the health benefits of it. So I did some research and the benefits are below 🙂

What Is Saffron?

Saffron is a spice! It is a spice that comes from a flower called the crocus sativus. There are not a lot of saffron ‘farms’ here in the United States, so if you have saffron, it is most likely imported from either Greece, Iran, Morocco, or India.

Health Benefits of Saffron?

So, I didn’t know that saffron actually had so many health benefits. For starters, it is a super powerful antioxidants, it may help improve mood and treat depressive symptoms, and it may help with cancer-fighting properties. In addition, it may reduce PMS symptoms, and…it may act as an aphrodisiac. Saffron also may reduce appetite and aid wight loss, while also helping with reducing health disease risk factors, may help lower blood sugar levels, may improve eyesight with age-related macular degeneration, and it may improve memory in adults with Alzheimer’s disease.

And what’s wonderful about all of this is that saffron is easy to add into your diet, especially adding it so pastas and risottos, and other rice dishes!

Side-Effects?

So, saffron is generally safe with super micro side-effects, but do not take high doses. I believe there are saffron pills that people are taking, and if you’re thinking about taking them, please speak with your doctor first to make sure it’s okay for you.

Another thing about saffron is that if you get saffron powder, most of the time it is mixed with other ingredients, like beets, red-dyed silk fibers, paprika, and turmeric, so please be careful with that as well! Be sure to always get pure saffron and from a reputable brand to be safe!

Do you use saffron? What do you make with it?

  1. We, in India, use saffron from time to time in preparing multiple dishes, both main course and dessert. It’s expensive and is hence a luxury here but adds so much flavour to the food. But I didn’t know about so many of its health benefits that you mentioned. Thank you for sharing.
